Residential Life: What to Expect in Quarantine/Isolation

So you’ve tested positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone who tested positive and now you have to isolate or quarantine—what are your next steps?

For students living in Loyola's residence halls, Loyola has developed a comprehensive set of protocols designed to provide holistic care and services you will need for the duration of your isolation or quarantine, while also protecting your fellow Wolf Pack members, faculty, employees, and the greater New Orleans community.

All students who have been exposed to COVID-19 or have tested positive should report their status on Loyola's Public Health Portal. In addition, you may reach out to a Public Health Coordinator by emailing or calling 504.865.3757.

Isolation and quarantine can be challenging, but we hope by acting swiftly and responsibly, we can make this time as comfortable as possible for you and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in our community.

We’re here to support you! While the public health guidelines for quarantine and isolation may feel quite limiting, we’re committed to making sure you can feel as connected as possible during this time.

Jessamyn works as the Residential Life Coordinator and works directly with Loyola University New Orleans’ COVID-response team. Jessamyn received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a minor in Political Science from Loyola University New Orleans in 2020, and she is currently working on her Masters of Arts in Criminology and Justice from Loyola. Jessamyn was raised in Seattle, Wa., and has always been interested in the role of local government in addressing social problems. She looks forward to continuing her study of the intersectionality of government affairs, social problems, and criminal justice reform.

Isolation: You will receive a phone call from the Residential Life Coordinator providing you with a temporary room assignment. You will also receive a call from a Public Health Coordinator to explain what to expect during isolation from Student Health, confirm the end date, and initiate contact tracing.

Quarantine: You will receive a phone call from a Public Health team member to explain the process for monitoring symptoms, receive testing, confirm the end date, and initiate contact tracing. You will then receive a call from the Residential Life Coordinator confirming if you’ll be able to either stay in your assigned room for the duration of your quarantine or if you’ll need to be assigned a temporary room.

While in quarantine or isolation, it is important that you stay in your assigned room with the exception of receiving approved medical care or in case of an emergency.

  • Isolation: Students testing positive for COVID-19 will be temporarily relocated to an on-campus isolation room for the duration of their required isolation. Isolation rooms are located on the 12th floor of Buddig Hall.
  • Quarantine: In many cases, students needing to quarantine due to exposure to COVID-19, may do so in their assigned residence hall room. In certain cases a student may be required to move to an on-campus isolation room for their quarantine.

In some cases, students may choose to isolate or quarantine in an alternate location such as home or another off-campus temporary residence. If a student chooses this option, it will be at their own expense and responsibility and must be communicated to the Residential Life Coordinator.

What to pack:

  • Loyola ID card
  • Personal towel
  • Toiletries
  • Clothes for 10-14 days
  • School required textbook and academic materials
  • Electronic supplies, including phone, computer, and chargers
  • Favorite snacks you have on hand in your room
  • Any necessary medication for the duration of your isolation/quarantine
    • The Residential Life coordinator will coordinate any medication pick-ups and deliveries from pharmacies if needed.
  • We also encourage you to bring any bedding, or other personal items that will make your experience more comfortable.

Loyola will provide:

  • MicroFridge and microwave
  • Standard linens (pillow cases, blanket, bed sheets)
  • Reusable Brita Water Filter bottle
  • Toilet paper
  • Garbage bags
  • Bar soap (upon request)
  • Shampoo and conditioner (upon request)
  • Menstrual hygiene products (upon request)
  • Free laundry service (upon request)

If you need replenishments to these supplies, contact the Residential Life Coordinator.

If you’re required to isolate on-campus or need to move to an isolation room for quarantine, the Residential Life Coordinator will contact you regarding an escort from your current location (Student Health Services or assigned room) to your temporary assigned room. 

Be sure you are wearing a mask at all times and continue to wear a mask until you arrive in your temporary assigned room. 

Contactless check-in:

Once you’ve arrived into isolation or have begun your period of quarantine in your assigned room, Loyola’s Residential Life Coordinator will follow-up with you via email and phone call to confirm you’ve been moved. 

Complete the following intake survey, in order for Residential Life to assess your needs.

During this period, except for an emergency or to seek medical care (or required testing), it is important that you do not leave your isolation room or quarantine location. If you are quarantined in a shared suite (e.g. Cabra and Carrollton Hall), you should remain in your room unless you need to use the suite restroom, and be sure to maintain physical distance and wear a mask when you do.

Please do not leave to exercise, pick-up food, go shopping or even take a walk.

Student conduct: We understand that both isolation and quarantine can be burdensome. However, Loyola must  investigate every report it receives of alleged violations of the isolation or quarantine policies. Sanctions for violations could include but are not limited to verbal warning, conduct reprimand, disciplinary fines, disciplinary probation, removal from University housing, and suspension or dismissal from the University.

Wellness Assistants (WAs) are Certified Nurse Assistants who conduct meal deliveries, laundry pick-up, garbage removal, and other day-to-day tasks needed for residents in isolation and quarantine, or assigned by the Residential Life Coordinator.

WAs will conduct three daily wellness checks at 9:15 a.m. or 11:15 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 4:30 p.m. Residents are required to wear a mask during each wellness check and to express any immediate concerns (e.g. the need for menstrual hygiene products, garbage disposal, etc). 

If there is no answer, WAs will report to the Residential Life Coordinator or the Residential Life Director-on Duty for an official follow-up.

Isolation: During this time, Student Health Services (SHS) staff will call you daily to check in with you and assess your symptoms. This medical call is necessary to monitor for worsening of symptoms, which may require intervention and include hospitalization if a higher level of care is required.  It is also important you answer on your last days of isolation to avoid extending your isolation period as students must be cleared by SHS to leave isolation and return to campus.

Quarantine: During this time, you are expected to self-report symptoms or lack of symptoms to a secure online portal (REDCap). The Public Health team will be monitoring your submissions and you may be called or sent a text message to follow up. It is also recommended you receive testing at SHS 5-7 days after last exposure or immediately if symptoms develop during quarantine. Non-compliance could result in longer periods of quarantine. 

Non-symptomatic during Quarantine Period: 

  • Quarantine can end after Day 10 without testing and if no symptoms have been reported during daily monitoring
    • Students must submit the symptom survey at least 7 out of the 10 days ( ≥70% compliance) via REDCap to be released from quarantine after 10 days. 
  • Testing is not required but it is recommended on day 5-7 of quarantine
  • Non-compliant individuals will be required to complete the 14 day quarantine period. Non-compliant means the student did not submit the required symptom survey via REDCap at least 7 of the 10 days. 

Symptomatic during Quarantine Period: 

  • Get tested and self-isolate immediately - Student Health/Public Health will follow-up

Please note that all exposures will continue to be evaluated by the Public Health team on a case-by-case basis, and exceptions are inevitable. However, we believe these new guidelines will ease some of the burden placed on those asked to quarantine, without sacrificing public safety and the safety of our campus community.

The Residential Life Coordinator will contact you regarding any dietary restrictions or allergies in the contact-free check-in. 

You will receive a welcome letter and reusable Brita water bottle shortly after your arrival in your temporary space or in your room if you are directed to quarantine in place. All temporary isolation rooms will have a MicroFridge unit provided in the room. If you are quarantining in place and do not have a MicroFridge, Residential Life can provide one to you temporarily.  

In coordination with Dining Services, Residential Life will deliver residents with three daily meal deliveries: continental breakfast and snacks (9:45 a.m.), a hot lunch (12:30- 1:00 p.m.), and a hot dinner (4:30- 5:00 p.m.).

  • Meals will be charged against the student’s meal plan. If there is no weekly or block meal plan in place, then meals will be charged to the student’s wolf bucks at $5 per meal. 
  • Meal preferences: students will have the opportunity to select their daily meal preferences from a limited menu: Simple Servings line, pizza bar, and items from the grill. 
  • The Residential Life Coordinator will provide students with a survey link and menu options during the contact-free check-in. Students should expect a 24-hour turnaround for preferences to be reflected in their delivered meals. 
  • If your meal preferences cannot be honored immediately, Simple Servings will be provided to you in the interim. 

Meals and snacks desired beyond what Loyola provides daily are the responsibility of the individual student. Options include the following:

  • Campus Delivery Options
    • Iggy’s cupboard order (free of charge)
    • Market grocery order (self-funded through GrubHub account)
    • Cookie delivery: One of our Resident Ministers bakes homemade cookies every Wednesday for residents in isolation and quarantine (dietary restrictions are considered). 
  • Off Campus Delivery Options
    • InstaCart or equivalent grocery order (self funded)
    • Quarantine in place: Individual meal orders from off campus or on campus vendors are not supported by our operations. If you are quarantined in place, meal deliveries/order outside of your scheduled deliveries must be coordinated with friends to drop at your door (self funded).
    • Isolation in isolation rooms: Individual meal orders for off campus or on campus retail can be coordinated once per day with the Residential Life Coordinator between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. (self funded). This service is considered an enhancement. If operational adjustments require temporary suspension of individual meal order deliveries, then students in isolation will be notified in advance.

Meal prices: meal services for students in quarantine and isolation will be charged to their school account (meal plan/Wolf Bucks), for the meals delivered to their room. Attached are the following rates: breakfast ($5.00), lunch ($9.25), and dinner ($11.25). Students are available to adjust the frequency of their meals based on what they’d like to receive (breakfast, lunch, dinner, or all three). Residential Life can also discontinue their meal deliveries upon their request.

In coordination with Cleanerama laundromat, Residential Life will provide isolation and quarantine residents with laundry service (free of charge).

Every Monday is the primary pick-up day, while Wednesday is a secondary pick-up day. The Residential Life Coordinator will reach out to residents the day prior to pick-up days to coordinate based on need. Laundry service procedure:

  • Residents will place dirty clothes in a Residential Life-provided linen bag
  • Place the linen bag into a provided garbage bag
  • Tie off the garbage bag and place outside of your door before 10:00 a.m. on the designated laundry day

Residents are responsible for bringing their personal medication(s) to their temporary isolation room (if applicable). Medication deliveries that need to be coordinated from either Student Health Services or from an off-campus pharmacy can be coordinated with the Residential Life Coordinator.

For medical treatment and on-site testing, students must notify the Residential Life Coordinator and Public Health Coordinator about the respective time/date.

Upon your arrival into isolation or quarantine in place, the Residential Life Coordinator will provide your name and CWID to Loyola’s on-campus United States Postal Services and the Residential Life office to sort and deliver your mail and/or packages when applicable. 

Residents who utilize the on-campus Amazon lockers will need to coordinate with the Residential Life Coordinator for a pick-up time and delivery.

Please tie up your trash bag tightly and deposit your trash outside your assigned room’s door by 9:00 a.m. each morning for pick-up.

Each isolation room is cleaned according to the CDC recommendations pre/post each occupation.

Disinfectant spray and paper towels will be provided in each temporary isolation restroom. Students in these spaces are encouraged to sanitize their room and bathroom while residing in isolation.

Health or life safety emergencies (24 hours). This includes emergency illness, safety concerns about drugs or alcohol, and facilities emergencies.

Virtual Engagement Opportunities:

Loyola’s Department of Student Life and Ministry has assembled a robust collection of online programming, events, activities and religious services you can access while in isolation or quarantine here.

All students in quarantine will be expected to participate in their coursework remotely. Student Affairs will help you inform your professors.

If you notice that something in the room needs to be fixed, please email the Residential Life Coordinator as soon as possible, and our Physical Plant staff will address non-urgent issues once the student departs. 

If an urgent problem occurs (e.g. toilet is overflowing, the A/C isn’t working, sugar ants), contact the Residential Life Coordinator for assessment of the situation.

You are required to complete your full period of isolation and quarantine, even if you test negative during your quarantine period. 

Isolation is a way to separate someone after they receive a positive COVID-19 test to help prevent the spread of the virus. Patients in isolation after a positive test result may or may not present active symptoms of the virus. The amount of time in isolation will depend on the length of illness, presence of symptoms, and health care provider’s guidance. 

Quarantine is used to separate someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 and reduce the risk that infected persons might unknowingly transmit infection to others. Quarantine helps prevent spread of disease that can occur before a person knows they have the virus. It also ensures that persons who become symptomatic or are otherwise diagnosed during quarantine can be rapidly brought to care and evaluated.

Isolation: Upon confirmation from Student Health Services and completion of a room condition report, you are free to leave quarantine and resume regular activities. 

Quarantine: You can end your quarantine after confirmation and guidance provided from a Public Health Coordinator

If my roommate has been exposed to COVID-19, do I have to quarantine as well?

  • If your roommate has been exposed to COVID-19 and must quarantine, you can either quarantine with your roommate or temporarily move to a vacant room and continue with your normal day-to-day schedule. If you choose to remain living with someone in quarantine, every effort should be made to physically separate from that person and you should take steps to prevent the spread of infection, including through social distancing, masking, and good hand hygiene. You are accepting a risk of exposure to COVID-19 if the quarantined person develops the illness and your quarantine period will be extended from the date of last close contact (defined as being less than 6 feet away from the COVID-positive individual for at least 15 minutes cumulatively over a 24-hour period).

My roommate tested positive for COVID-19, what does that mean for me?

  • Your roommate is required to move to an on-campus isolation room, and you may be required to quarantine as a result of close contact (defined as being less than 6 feet away from the COVID-positive individual for at least 15 minutes cumulatively over a 24-hour period. A Public Health Coordinator will reach out to you to determine your need to quarantine and where. Self-quarantine can typically occur in your assigned room.
    • If you are a Biever resident, you may be required to move to one of our temporary isolation rooms due to the congregate nature of the bathroom facilities in Biever. The Public Health team member will direct you and provide additional guidance.
